Why you need to migrate now.

Magento is ending support for the Magento 1 platform in June of 2020, but moving to Magento 2 isn’t a simple upgrade… It’s a full-blown replatforming scenario. Merchants will need to rebuild their theme, extensions, and integrations from scratch. For those who stay on Magento 1 after support ends, the sites will be increasingly vulnerable, extensions will likely break, and sites could stop functioning altogether. Learn everything you need to know about End of Life and the site migration process below.

3 REASONS TO ACT NOW

MONTHS

WEEKS

HOURS

The average migration takes 8 months (roughly 3,600 hours of work) to complete. Depending on what data you have, the integrations you use, and the extensions you need to build or replace, the process could take even longer. Remember, merchants moving off of Magento 1 also need to factor in time to choose a new theme, completely redesign your site, and create new graphics. After that comes time for debugging, which is a luxury many merchants won't have unless they migrate now.

You Can't Rush Innovation

Merchants are out of time to plan their migrations. We've created this page so you can get up to speed as quickly as possible. Scroll to learn all you can about the replatforming process and the dangers of staying on Magento 1. Once you're ready to begin the process, our consultants are here to give you a free assessment and get you started right away.

MIGRATION TIMELINE

January 2019 - May 2019

Your Window of Opportunity

Use this time to do the necessary prep and research to begin your migration. If you don't find an agency who can fulfill your project requirements in this window, it will only get tougher and riskier from here.

May 2019

Project Discovery & Requirements Gathering

Average time: 1 Month

We use this time to get to know your system(s) and compile everything needed to begin your migration.

Note: We recommend merchants begin discovery by this point, as noted in the countdown clock above.

June 2019

Site Build & Migration

Average Time: 7 - 8 Months

This is the average amount of time it takes to complete a proper M1 to M2 migration. Make sure you factor this into your plans.

s

August 2019

NEW PROJECT CUTOFF

All migration projects must be signed by this point in order to be launched before June 2020.

q

March 2020

End Site Build & Migration

Note: Project time can be longer for sites with complex integrations or legacy systems.

April 2020

Debugging & Repairs

Average Time: 1 Month

This is an extra month added to migration time as a buffer. We will use this time to fix bugs, add features, make site changes, and repair any issues that arose during your migration. Not everything that worked on Magento 1 fits nicely into Magento 2, so we'll use this time to make your site 100% launch-ready.

May 2020

FINAL SITE LAUNCHES

Note: This is when less informed merchants will realize they should have started sooner.

June 2020

Judgement Day

Magento 1 support goes offline. No new security patches have been issued, leaving remaining merchants vulnerable. Outdated extensions begin breaking. Sites begin to crash. Merchants scramble.

Note: Don't let this be you. Scroll to learn more about the advantages you'll get when you switch to Magento 2.

END OF LIFE “HOW TO” SERIES

Learn everything you need to know about migrating from Magento 1, the risks and opportunities involved, and new technology that can accelerate your migration timeline.

Here's how M1 End of Life could make or break your customer experience:

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

The industry has been focused on Magento 2 for some time, so developers are no longer making extensions for Magento 1. This can be problematic, causing site breaks and downtime. These issues can make you an easy target for hackers, and cause you to fall behind competitors whose CX is bolstered by M2 extensions.

BENEFITS OF M2

Magento 2 allows merchants to create multiple databases, helping merchants do more with their data (think of integrations like Brightpearl, Akeneo, Dotmailer and Yotpo that help you benefit from different data tranches). Magento 2’s completely customizable script is compatible with all 3rd party extensions, making integrations faster and easier.

SECURITY

After M1 End of Life, Magento will no longer make security patches for Magento 1. This means your customers and your business will be in jeopardy. In addition, while Magento will support security patches until “Judgement Day” in June of 2020, Magento 1 is merely an afterthought, as Magento and Adobe have been primarily focused on creating patches for Magento 2, and M1 will no longer receive any new features or innovations.

BENEFITS OF M2

Magento 2 comes with upgraded security, with new security patches coming out any time a vulnerability is found.

FUNCTIONALITY

The Magento 2 dashboard is incredibly intuitive and user-friendly compared to Magento 1.

Magento 2 is also built for B2B, with helpful tools and functionality to make your B2B customer experience faster and more efficient.

BENEFITS OF M2

Lastly, Magento 2 allows customers to log in with their social media credentials, giving merchants more user data for marketing and customer 1 retention campaigns.
